"Making enemies": Pericles in Cratinus' comedy and the comic construction of the ἐχθρός
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to argue that political satire in Cratinus’ comedy implies the deliberate construction of a ἐχθρός. The term ἐχθρός is used here and not another -such as κωμῳδούμενος-, among other reasons because we will try to demonstrate that this satirical criticism entails a feeling of “hatred/enmity” (μισεῖν/ἔχθρα) according to the conceptualizations that Aristotle makes about of this emotion. Likewise, in this work we will also try to establish that behind the laughable construction of the ἐχθρός lies a manipulation aimed at emotionally compromising the comic spectator with the ultimate goal of involving him in a certain ethical assessment towards the “hated ones”, towards his group, or towards what they represent.
