Abstract

In this paper, I show two distinct stages in Thomas S. Kuhn’s philosophical development, from his early conceptualization of his theory to an almost final stage in the writing of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. A goal of this paper is to show how the concept of paradigm emerged; another goal is to show that the itinerary that brought Kuhn to that point had different stages, and that these were different responses to also different problems. In short, Kuhn did not travel the road to paradigms linearly, and previous concepts were not simple anticipations of the notion of paradigm.
