Practical music on Saint Augustine: "vestigium" and "signum"

Abstract

During his period of literary production, many times Augustine worked on topic of practical music. In this paper, I will show that Augustine used two different theories in order to describe practical music in relation with the spiritual world: the Liberal Arts theory and the Sign theory. By using these theories Augustine defined practical music as vestigium and as signum respectively. Finally I will analyze the difference between two approaches by considering three elements: the nature of relationship between material and spiritual world, the spiritual content involved and the idea of beauty implied in them.
