"The Circle of Philosophy and the History of Philosophy" by Giovanni Gentile and His Epistolary Discussion with Benedetto Croce. Introductory Study, Translation, and Notes
Abstract
This work offers the Spanish translation of the note that Giovanni Gentile wrote on The Circle of Philosophy and the History of Philosophy at the end of 1906, conceived as an appendix to the lecture with which he inaugurated his professorship at the University of Palermo in January 1907. The note and the lecture provoked the immediate rejection of Benedetto Croce, giving rise to an intense epistolary controversy between the two Italian philosophers, conducted between December 1906 and February 1907, which is also presented here in its entirety in Spanish translation. The work opens with a preliminary study examining the centrality of the concept of history in Actualism, the role of the note in the evolution of Gentile’s thought, its editorial history, and some reflections on the epistolary exchange.
