Henry of Ghent on intellect and will according to some Quaestiones quodlibetales

Abstract

The article studies the contribution of Enrique de Gante to the study of the dynamism of intellect and will in the context of late medieval Augustinianism. After analyzing the quaestiones of this author that more clearly present the thesis of the primacy of the will over the intellect and the continuity of the thought of Henry of Ghent with another augustinian such as Scotus (and both with modern anthropology, mainly in Kant), the article concludes by affirming the existence of a common link of Anselmian origin between these three authors that makes possible the dissociation of volition from the intellectual order and, ultimately, the transformation of the ethics founded on the recta ratio into a new ethics of the recta voluntas.
