Reflections on art therapy in Spanish museums. A way forward.
Abstract
This paper reflects on the function of a museum today in relation to the use of its spaces and collections in the work on therapeutic processes, as well as the contributions of the arts as health and wellbeing agents. We find that art therapy in museums, as opposed to the more usual therapeutic practice such as clinical or hospital practice, has a community-based development, making the museum a stimulating and facilitating environment for the professional use of creative therapies.
Nowadays, cultural institutions are more open to explore their social value, taking advantage of the emotive potential of collections and contributing to the role of art for therapeutic purposes. The article delves into the intersection between art therapy and museums, where emerge new ways of understanding these sociocultural places that favour care and health and it reviews how art therapy in museums is moving towards a specific, specialised and professionalised model.
