Islamic Madrid, forgotten Madrid: Analysis of the heritage dissonance since the case of the Cuesta de la Vega wall section

Abstract

This article analyzes the heritage dissonance related to the archeological remains of the Islamic wall of Cuesta de la Vega in Madrid. For this purpose, the archeological documentation generated during the last decades of the previous century has been studied and connected with other elements that are relevant for heritage interpretation, such as identity or the cultural construction of discourse. In this regard, the article intends to move from the particular (the wall itself) to the general (lines of research, debates and references) while also connecting with other cases of Islamic heritage in the city of Madrid. The result provides a deeper understanding of the knowledge on cultural heritage and its management, as well as regarding the social, ideological, and cultural elements involved in the construction of biased discourse on heritage realities. The consultation of archaeological files and its accompanying documents emerges as a useful tool for other research work.
