Abstract

After the “Surname Law” was introduced in 1934, all Turkish citizens started to adopt a name and surname. A name could be comprised of several words however only one surname was permitted. According to this law, the father of each family had to choose a single surname for his family.

This article analyses modern Turkish name preferences among citizens of the Republic of Turkey today.
