A Linguistic Study of Lancelot Addison’s Seventeenth-Century Index of the Moorish words
Abstract
In 1671, Lancelot Addison wrote an ethnographic account following his seven-year tenure (1663-1670) as chaplain to the British garrison of Tangier. His book provides historical and ethnographic insights into the region and its inhabitants. This article aims to enhance our understanding of European sources of knowledge on seventeenth-century Moroccan Arabic. To this end, it provides detailed information on Addison’s life and works, alongside an analysis of the linguistic content found in the aforementioned book. By focusing on the Arabic dialect of Tangier, this study offers an opportunity to revisit and critically assess earlier statements regarding this variety of Moroccan Arabic.
